Hinigaran mayor opposes DOH proposal to ban firecrackers

HINIGARAN town Mayor Jose Nadie Arceo has voiced his opposition to a proposal submitted by the Department of Health (DOH) for a total ban on the use of firecrackers.

Arceo said the proposal will affect the residents of his town who are relying on the firecracker and pyrotechnic business.

He said instead of a total ban, the national government should instead push for a stricter regulation in the use of firecrackers.

The town mayor also said he will request the local council to pass a resolution voicing their sentiments over the DOH’s proposal.

Earlier, DOH Secretary Dr. Francisco Duque is pushing for an absolute ban on the use of firecrackers stating that “nothing good is coming out in its use.”

“[You] are only having temporary amusement in exchange for eternal disability, is it worth it?” Duque questioned.

Even the national office of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) backs the DOH proposal with BFP spokesperson, Fire Senior Supt. Geranddie Agonos stating even the legal firecrackers can still cause damage.

In the Province, Hinigaran town posted having the most number of firecracker-related incidents during the New Year’s celebration based on Police records. (TDE)
