AS MARTIAL Law ended on December 31, 2019, newly-appointed Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines Lieutenant General Felimon Santos Jr. vowed to strengthen security checkpoints to ensure public safety and security.

“What we want to do is to continue the implementation of strict security measures. We want to ensure that even without martial law, our people will be at peace and feel secure. You will see checkpoints and strict security measures,” Santos said.

After more than two years the martial law was no longer extended citing the improved security condition here.

It can be recalled that the military ruling was first declared by President Rodrigo Duterte on May 23, 2017, after terrorist Maute Group sieged Marawi City.

Despite the liberation of the city from the Isis-inspired armed group, the Martial Law was extended twice as granted by Congress from 2018 to 2019.

“We’re not planning to bring it back or else parang hindi tayo nag-improve. The objective of martial law is mawala yong threat ng terrorism. We know that the terrorists could not do ‘yong wide terroristic action like Marawi, hindi na sila capable ngayon niyan,” Santos added.

In Eastern Mindanao, no human rights violation committed by the troops was recorded during martial law implementation.

However, the Task Force Davao has recommended measures to prevent lawless elements from entering the city by promoting culture of security and suspension of permit to carry firearms.
