Aton scores perfect in arbiters tourney

DAVAO City’s Ariel Aton scored perfect five points to clinch the title of the recently-concluded Davraa Arbiters Random Blitz Tournament held in Tagum City.

Second seed Aton outclassed Nidz Mugat, Yong Barba, Melchor Garcia, Larry Nunez and Von Requilman in the five-round Swiss System format chessfest organized as side event of Department of Education (DepEd) Davao Region’s seminar for chess arbiters who will officiate in the upcoming Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) Meet 2020 on February 24 to March 1 in Compostela Valley.

Aton said, “Kami-kami lang ana nagdula mga arbiters tong nag seminar mi sa Tagum (It was just a friendly tournament for seminar participants in Tagum).”

He added that all DepEd divisions in the region were represented in the conference.

Fifth-seed Melchor Garcia, for his part, edged fellow four-pointer Requilman via superior tiebreaks, 15-13.5, to grab the runner-up honors. The latter finished third instead.

A total of 13 woodpushers competed in the event with top seed Francis Achivida placing sixth after earning three points.
