2019: A ‘fiery’ year for Region 7

THE number of fire incidents in Central Visayas almost doubled between 2018 and 2019.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) 7 recorded 1,893 fires last year compared to the 1,005 it recorded the year before.

But based on damages, 2018 was three times more costly at P1.1 billion compared to the P250 million in properties that went up in flames in 2019.

Of the five fire districts in Region 7, Cebu Province had the most number of cases, with Cebu City recording 1,311 fire incidents compared to 550 the year before.

Cebu was followed by Negros Oriental, which recorded 335 fire incidents compared to 159 in 2018.

In Bohol, the number of fire incidents dropped to 177 in 2019 compared to 232 in 2018.

The Lapu-Lapu City Fire District recorded 50 fire incident last year compared to the 29 in 2018.

In Siquijor, fewer fires were also recorded last year at 20 compared to 35 in 2018.

In 2019, the most conflagrant month was April, which recorded 336 fires. In 2018, it was August, with the BFP 7 recording 160 fire incidents.

The estimated damage to properties was higher in 2018 because of the fire that struck the Metro Ayala Cebu at the Cebu Business Park in Cebu City in January that year.

In 2019, properties with an estimated worth of P74 million were destroyed by fire in Cebu compared to the P1.006 billion in properties that were razed the year before.

Negros Oriental recorded P174 million in damages in 2019 compared to the P35 million in 2018.

In Bohol, which recorded fewer fires last year compared to the year before, only posted P21 million fire-related damages compared to P31 million in 2018.

The Lapu-Lapu City Fire District recorded P6.3 million in damages to properties compared to P3.8 million in 2018.

In Siquijor, fire incidents destroyed P958,000 worth of properties compared to the P1.8 million the year before. (HBL / PJB)
