THE Sacred Heart School-Boys Batch 1985 Foundation Inc. held its third “ArTabang” last month, bringing the best of local artistry from all over the country to Cebu. It was an exhibition of local art and culture while giving back at the same time.

The first ArTabang took place in December 2013 and was created to help the victims of Typhoon Yolanda. It was followed by the second one in 2017 after the earthquake that affected those in Ormoc. The recent one, held last December 7, 2019 at Oakridge IT Center, Oakridge Business Park, was created in response to the victims of Typhoon Tisoy and the earthquake that took place in Mindanao.

“ArTabang was conceptualized in response to calamities. It was a concerted effort which brought together collectors and artists with the heart to help. It provided a way for artists to help people through their art, finding meaning and satisfaction beyond monetary gains,” shared Sonia Yrastorza, ArTabang project coordinator, who added that this will also help the artists.

“For this third ArTabang, the art organizations benefit from a 50 percent share in the sale of their auctioned pieces. This, they will use in their own projects. The Art Association of the Philippines dreams of a permanent home for their organization and will be using their share to help buy a lot for this. The sale from the smaller, individual works will go in full to the artists.”

That night, over 300 artworks were exhibited as well as 33 works auctioned. Part of the proceeds will go to the calamity survivors.

Artists who took part of the exhibit were from different parts of the country from Metro Manila, Tanay, Angeles, Bicol, Iloilo and Cebu. Those who joined included the Portrait Artists Society of the Philippines Inc., Art Association of Bacolod-Negros, Orange Project, Viva Excon Organization Inc., Onse, Mobile Art & Science Space, Block 17 from Bacolod, Cebu Artists Inc. and Southwest Art Club.
