DSWD pours P17-M aid to Typhoon Ursula victims in Panay

KALIBO, Aklan -- The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has approved P17 million as aid for victims of Typhoon Ursula (Phanfone) in the provinces of Panay Island.

May Rago-Castillo, information officer of DSWD-Western Visayas, said around 1,260,969 individuals from the provinces of Aklan, Antique, Iloilo and Capiz have been affected by the typhoon since December 25, 2019.

Signal number 3 was hoisted over Panay Island when the typhoon hit the island last December 25.

"Of the P17-million fund, some P13 million of them came from the DSWD, while around P3.9 million came from the counterparts of the local government units and other agencies involved," Castillo said.

In Capiz, some 482,205 individuals were given aid; Iloilo with 270,817; Aklan with 428,970; and Antique with 78,977.

Castillo said that as of January 4, 2020, some 4,664 persons are still in evacuation centers especially in the province of Capiz.

She added that based on their records, some 4,537 houses were destroyed, while 39,716 houses were damaged. (SunStar Philippines)
