THE De La Salle University Green Archers have welcomed back Derick Pumaren to be their new head coach in the UAAP men’s basketball tournament.

Pumaren’s return to the Green Archers is part of the school’s efforts to turn things around. The Green Archers have missed the Final Four in each of the last two seasons.

“De La Salle University is pleased to announce that Frederick ‘Derick’ Pumaren is the new head coach of the Men’s Basketball Team effective January 1, 2020,” La Salle’s official statement read.

The Pumarens have a long and successful history with La Salle’s basketball program with Derick and younger brother, Franz, racking up numerous championships. However, this is actually the first time that a Pumaren will be at the helm since Dindo functioned as head coach in 2011.

This development will also pit Derick against Franz with the latter now acting as head coach of the Adamson Soaring Falcons.

The older Pumaren won back-to-back titles for the Green Archers in 1989 and 1990 before leaving in 1992 to go coach in the PBA. Pumaren has coach numerous teams in the professional ranks, namely Pepsi, Sunkist, Sta. Lucia, Purefoods, FedEx and Talk N Text.

Pumaren was last seen in the UAAP in 2017, when he was head coach of the University of the East. He then moved on to coach to Centro Escolar University before parting ways in December 2019.

“The University welcomes back Coach Derick to the Lasallian community as he maps out the new direction of the Green Archers,” the statement added. (JNP)
