Tay Tung survives Livingstone, 72-70; shares top spot with CSAV

BACOLOD Tay Tung High School Thunderbolts had their needed break in the dying seconds to pull-off a 72-70 victory over Livingstone International School last Sunday and share the top spot in Group B with Colegio de Sta. de Victorias with 2-0 slate in the ongoing National Basketball Training Center (NBTC)-Bacolod leg played at the BAYS Center.

Thunderbolts had struggled throughout the game as they have committed numerous turnovers and gave up lots of inside points to Livingstone.

With 55 seconds left in the game, Livingstone had kept a point lead, 70-69 before Kent Justin Esparagoza nailed a crucial 2-pointer to put Thunderbolts on top, 71-70.

Livingstone had their chance to take back the lead with 17.8 seconds left in the game but, unable to convert their shot as Tay Tung took control of the ball possession. Thunderbolts guard Fritz Felix Valencia was fouled and was sent to the free-throw line with 6.6 seconds. Valencia, however, split his charities which gave Livingstone a room to tie or escape with a win. But, Thunderbolts successfully defended and denied Livingstone to take a decent shot as the clock expired.

Joseph Palaganas and Martin Biatinco led Tay Tung with 12 points each as Henje Demisana added 11 points and Esparagoza with 8 markers. Meanwhile, Merviva anchored Livingstone with 22 points.

In the other match, Colegio de Sta. Ana came out with a dominating performance when it crashed Colegio de San Agustin-Bacolod, 100-50 behind the 19 points of El Jay Resolis and Jules Garcia with 16 points while Jessie Amago, Mico Exaltado, and Rommel Hechanova added 10 points apiece.

Sum-ag National High School Golden Stags, on the other hand, bounced back in the tournament with a 79-52 victory over Negros Occidental High School, who suffered its second loss on a wide margin.

Baby Alfred Morales spearheaded the Golden Stags with 17 points backstopped by Christian John Bayotas, Ian Espadera and Joseph Ngalongay with 14 points each.

For Group A, St. John’s Institute Baby Falcons ruled over Escalante National High School, 93-70 as Joshua Benedict Baldonado delivered 26 points including 5 triples as Kyan Aric Andrada added 20 points while Jade Hermedalla sizzled with 36 points for Escalante NHS.

La Consolacion College-Bacolod also scored a win over the University of St. La Salle, 77-70 as Lance Benitez and Kensay Sarco poured 19 points apiece as Jenri Duterte added 17 points. Meanwhile, Nellbert John Minerva also has 19 points for USLS.

For Sunday’s main game, Colegio de San Nicolas de Tolentino-Recoletos outplayed Maranatha Christian College, 93-61.

This weekend, the next scheduled matches are tentatively scheduled at Brgy. Sum-ag gymnasium due to the unavailability of the BAYS Center.
