Lizada: Carpe Diem

SEIZE the day. Live the moment. Nothing exists but the present. The past, as someone said is a “bucket of ashes” and the future is the future and the only thing we have is the present.

Normally, whenever the New Year comes along, I am filled with worry as to what the year will bring. There have been good years and there have been not so good and the one thing I learned from those years is worry will not change things. What will happen will happen and no matter how hard we try to worry it away (yes, yes, most of us do that) it will not change anything.

However it does not mean that we live in reckless abandon, far from it. Living day to day does not mean you will not consider tomorrow. Far from it. Living day to day means doing your best, now. Noah was saved because he built an ark. And so must we. We must work and strive and prepare. And when the rains and floods come we live it up to the one who watches over us. God.

So this year I made a promise to myself. I will live day to day. I will try not to worry about tomorrow literally and figuratively. I will not be anxious about next week or next month because honestly what can I really do? What is asked of me is just to trust and to accept. There have been times when my world spun and I reeled from the impact but did worry help? Sometimes when life hits us it is something that we never thought would happen and most of the things that we worry about do not happen. Honestly all my worries did not prepare me for certain things. So really, why worry.

I know it is easy to say that but it does make sense. Worry comes from a German word that means to strangle. And that is what worry does, it strangles you and even paralyzes you if you are not careful. And not to mention worry can make you sick. And that is something that you can add to your worry list.

There are so many scary things out there that anything can happen. You sit in your room and suddenly the earth shakes. War can be looming in the Middle East. Your mounting debts. Anything. And we live in constant fear of things unknown. Do we wish to live this way?

So let go and live day by day. Life is not a matter of destinations but of journeys and the question is what kind of journey you would choose.
