Comelec-Cordillera awaits resumption of voter registration

THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) in the Cordillera Administrative Region is awaiting a resolution to resume the voter registration following the cancellation of the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections, which are supposed to be scheduled in May 2020.

Lawyer Julius Torres, Comelec Cordillera director, said the regional poll body is ready to conduct registration for interested new voters and for those wanting to update their voter status.

Torres is upbeat of the turnout for voter's registration or update their status after the huge turnout during the July to September 2019 voter registration.

The electoral tribunal recorded more than four million Filipinos applied to become voters in the last registration period, exceeding the target set by the commission.

Based on data coming from the Comelec Election and Barangay Affairs Department (Ebad), at least 4,097,003 applications were received nationwide during the August 1 to September 30, 2019 voter registration.

Filipinos 18 years old and above numbered 3,082,396, while applications from those 15 to 17 years old SK voters was recorded at 1,014,607, with more female registrants than males.

On December 3, 2019, however, President Rodrigo Duterte signed into law the bill postponing the elections, moving the polls from May 2020 to the first Monday of December 2022, giving barangay and SK officials elected in May 2018 a change to remain in power for five years, instead of just two.
