Virus in China remains mysterious

THE Department of Health–Cordillera (DOH) continue to coordinate with their national office and the Bureau of Quarantine (BOQ) in identifying the mysterious virus that has affected 44 individuals in China.

Karen Lonogan, senior health program officer of DOH-Cordillera Center for Health Development, said that although there are comparisons to SARS, this mysterious virus is still being studied.

“That is what other sources are saying because SARS before was also mysterious and was a new virus that was emerging at that time, however, our information at present is very limited coming from China government and even the World Health Organization,” Lonogan said.

According to reports, the said disease is similar to a “viral pneumonia of unknown origin”.

“So far what they are looking at is that there was no human to human transmission which was very less likely because there are still no health workers having the same symptoms unlike SARS. Although they are attributing this because mostly, the affected population had contact with sea foods, poultry and cattle. They attributed this to contact with animals but is still being investigated,” Lonogan added.

The health department continues to urge the public especially those with history of travel from China, to seek immediate medical consultation if experiencing any flu-like symptoms.

The DOH also called on the public to embrace healthy lifestyles, practice proper hand hygiene, and observe cough etiquette to prevent transmission of respiratory infections.

As of this writing, no cases of the mysterious virus were recorded by DOH-Cordillera.
