Official welcomes planned Baguio rehab

A BAGUIO City councilor expressed her support for the planned rehabilitation of the country’s summer capital.

In the weekly “Talakayan sa Environment Code” radio forum of Baguio Regreening Movement (BRM), Councilor Mylen Yaranon said this move of the national government is timely as this will show a positive resolution to the city’s environment.

“Among the primary objective for the rehabilitation of Baguio City is that it will help clear our five rivers from garbage. The management and cleaning of these rivers including the implementation of the three meter water mark level should be done to clear it from any structure of construction, aside from the rehabilitation of our sanitary camp which is much polluted. Whatever rehabilitation will be imposed in the city, we will follow that because it will be good for our city,” Yaranon said.

Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong earlier informed residents to prepare for the start of the planned rehabilitation of the country’s summer capital which will be announced by the secretaries of Tourism, Environment and Natural Resources and the Interior and Local Governments.

“The entry of national government agency into the rehabilitation of Baguio City is more on the budget since we would need to request for a bigger budget which the city cannot afford, and budget from the national government agencies would really help us a lot. That would really help boost whatever rehab we will be doing in the city,” Yaranon added.

Magalong said focus of the rehabilitation will be on the city’s fragile environment adding the need for the city to invest on sewer system.

The mayor also clarified and assured that no closure will be done during the rehabilitation since Baguio has a different situation from Boracay.
