‘Spat’ between neighbors leaves 2 brothers dead

TWO brothers were shot dead by their neighbor, a police officer, in Barangay Dumlog, Talisay City, Cebu past 10 p.m. Saturday, January 11, 2020.

The fatalities were identified as Joel Cabrera, 35, and Jerbes, 30.

Staff Sergeant Sidney Alisoso, 32, was arrested and detained at the Talisay City Police Station. He is a member of the Regional Drug Enforcement Unit of the Police Regional Office-Central Visayas in Cebu City.

The victims were reportedly throwing stones at Alisoso’s house before the incident happened.

Alisoso said he called the Talisay City Police Station for assistance.

Before a team of police officers could arrive in the area, Alisoso went out to talk with the two brothers. Jerbes, however, allegedly pulled out a bolo and swung it against Alisoso, who parried the attack and suffered a cut in the left arm, reported radio dySS.

Alisoso stepped back, pulled out his service firearm and shot at the two brothers, an act he described as self-defense.

Joel and Jerbes were reportedly drunk.

Alisoso surrendered to the Talisay City police and turned in the murder weapon -- his government-issued 9mm Glock 17 pistol.

However, the victims’ brother Jonathan offered another version: Joel and Jerbes did not throw stones at Alisoso’s house and there was no confrontation.

The Cabreras lived next to Alisoso.

Jonathan said his brothers were repairing their house. Maybe debris had struck the Alisoso residence, he said.

Jerbes left to sleep at a neighbor’s house. Later that night, Alisoso allegedly dragged him out and shot him.

Joel, who was asleep inside their house, was awakened by the gunshot. When he went out to check, he saw Jerbes on the ground. He tried to go to his brother, but Alisoso allegedly shot him.

Two years ago, the Cabreras had a row with Alisoso over stinking water that flowed out from the latter’s compound where pigs were roasted. The police officer is reportedly engaged in the selling of lechon.

The two families also quarreled when Alisoso made improvements on the fence erected by the Cabreras.

According to the victims’ mother Leticia, 65, the barangay tried to settle their differences, to no avail.

Leticia’s daughter reportedly confronted Alisoso at the office of Talisay City Mayor Gerald Anthony Gullas Jr. last Monday, January 6. However, she did not say what her daughter was doing there and what the meeting was about.

Leticia is demanding justice for her sons’ death. (BBT/KAL)
