PASSENGER traffic at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) reached 11.45 million from January to November 2019.

The country’s second busiest air hub saw an 11 percent increase in passenger volume during the 11-month period from the 10.35 million posted during the same period in 2018, latest figures from the government showed.

MCIA handled a total of 3.85 million and 7.60 million international and domestic passengers, respectively. The numbers were up 12 percent and 10 percent, respectively, from the comparable period in 2018.

Air traffic volume also rose seven percent to a total of 97,927 flights during the period, led by a double-digit growth in international flights.

Domestic flights totaled 72,059, up six percent, while overseas air traffic hit 25,868 flights, rising 11 percent.

Earlier, Edgar Saavedra, chief executive officer of Megawide Construction, said MCIA’s growth is expected to further thrive this year, given its robust revenue.

Phase 2 of the airport’s renovation of Terminal 1, which includes the construction of the Airport Village, is set to be completed in 2020. That is seen to boost the airport’s non-aero revenues, with new leasable spaces set to open.

Saavedra said strategic marketing and route development initiatives would continue to spur airport operations.

MCIA’s revenues rose 25 percent in the first nine months of 2019 to P2.7 billion, driven by robust passenger volume and commercial income.

Revenue from the share of passenger service charge rose 23 percent, as passenger volume remained healthy, while airport merchandise leasing improved by 15 percent. (CSL)
