Cebu Parklane launches Sinulog Exhibit, promos, events
Cebu Parklane International Hotel celebrates distinctly local culture and arts through “Sugbuanong Bahandi: A Sinulog Exhibit,” launched Jan. 10, 2020 at the Parklane lobby. It also introduced its other Sinulog events and promos.
Sugbuanong Bahandi: A Sinulog Exhibit
Now on its second year, the Sinulog exhibit highlights three representations of Cebu’s rich heritage led by Sto. Niño collector Josie Pereyra, fashion designer Dexter Alazas and painter and photographer Ruel Rosello, together with Cebu Parklane’s general manager Cenelyn Manguilimotan.
The event commenced with the blessing of the exhibit, especially the “Balaanong Gasa: A Display of Josie Pereyra’s Sto. Niño Collection,” which depicts the highlight and main reason of the Sinulog Festival.
Started in the 1980s, Pereyra’s antique collection came from her supplier in Argao who collected Sto. Niño and other saints’ relics and images from people who converted to other religions. Some of the images also come from old churches in Cebu and Bohol.
A fraction of her over 50 relics and images of Sto. Niño and other are displayed at the hotel’s exhibit. Some of the relics include a century-old Sto. Niño from the National Museum; Sto. Niño the Weaver; the Sleeping Sto. Niño; a framed Sto. Niño image with “Lagang,” a Cebuano art in which shells are formed into beautiful arrangements; a Sto. Niño painting; and an antique altar from an old church in Bohol.
There is also a painting exhibit titled “Sugbuanong Obra” by Rosello, the hotel’s ambassador for the Arts. His paintings showcase the vibrant and lively Filipino culture, games and traits like “bayanihan.” According to him, most of the pieces are collector’s items.
Likewise, the “Linya Sugbuana: An Amano Collection” by Alazas, the hotel’s fashion ambassador, continues to promote local fashion as he displays clothes, shoes, bags and accessories made out of Hablon de Cebu, a local fabric weaved from the town of Cebu.
The Sugbuanong Bahandi exhibit runs until Jan. 31.
Love and Devotion Lecture
Marketing and communications manager Jaybee Aquino also plugged the hotel’s upcoming and on-going Sinulog activities and promos during the launch.
Aquino announced that they will hold a lecture titled “Love and Devotion: 500 Years of Sto. Niño de Cebu” on Jan. 15, at 3:30 p.m. at Tupas Hall, located on the second floor of the hotel.
Open to the public, the lecture will discuss how the Filipinos’ devotion to the Child Jesus has spread throughout Cebu and the rest of the Philippines for the past five centuries. The guest speaker is the chairman of the Department of Anthropology, Sociology and History of the University of San Carlos, assistant professor Delilah Labajo.
