MisOr picked as pilot province for UN program

MISAMIS Oriental has been chosen as pilot province in Northern Mindanao for the implementation of massive reforestation program spearheaded by the United Nations (UN), Provincial Board Member Gerardo Sabal said Monday, January 13.

Sabal, chairman of the Provincial Board’s committee on environment and natural resources, said the Massive Environment Rehabilitation Program, which will be implemented by two UN agencies, will be a two-year program where an initial of five million trees will be planted during its first year.

“This is a very big project... and we are very fortunate the province of Misamis Oriental has been identified as the pilot area,” Sabal said.

Sabal further said that the committee on environment will be starting with the coordination of a technical working group for the said program. Part of the technical working group are the committees on youth and on association of barangay captains.

“This technical working group will be formalized during the next session for its coordination and made into a resolution, of course to be approved by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (Provincial Board),” Sabal said.

Updates on the said program, he added, will be given once the technical working group will be approved through a resolution issued by the Provincial Board.
