Pael hopes to end 3-fight losing slump

JOURNEYMAN Renoel Pael will test fast-rising Igorot prospect Carl Jammes Martin in a 10-rounder on Feb. 22, 2020, in Mandaluyong City.

“Martin is good. He’s a knockout artist. Our chances are slim but Pael will give him a run for his money. Martin will have fun fighting Pael,” Brix Flores, Pael’s trainer, told SunStar Cebu.

The 29-year-old Pael lost all three of his fights in 2019 and is on a three-fight losing slump. However, two of those three fights were very close.

After going 2-0 in 2018, Pael kicked off his 2019 campaign with a unanimous decision defeat in the hands of Japanese prospect Ryusei Kawaura in Japan. His next two fights were close split decision losses to Giovanni Escaner and Tatsuya Takahashi.

In just his fourth year in the pro ranks, the 20-year-old Martin has already shown so much promise. He’s a knockout artist and held regional titles in the World Boxing Council (WBC), World Boxing Association (WBA) and World Boxing Organization (WBO).

Pael should be a good test for Martin because he has faced some talented opposition, with the likes of interim WBA super flyweight Andrew Moloney, and one-time world title challengers Suguru Muranaka and Narast Aienleng.

Pael is 23-11-1 with 12 knockouts, while Martin is 15-0 with 14 knockouts. (EKA)
