Cebu United ends DBTC’s streak

IN A battle of undefeated teams, Cebu United came out on top to finish the elimination round as the No. 1 team in Group B of the Boys 14 Division of the AboitizLand Football Cup on Jan. 11, 2020 at the San Roque football field.

Cebu United blanked erstwhile undefeated Don Bosco Technical College (DBTC) B thanks to the brilliance of Javi Sian for its fifth straight win in the division and the No. 1 rank at 15 points. DBTC B lost for the first time and settled for second spot at a 4-1 record and 12 points.

Sian got the first goal in the 22nd and added a second in the 52nd to seal the team’s semifinal date against Group A No. 2, which is currently held by DBTC A. At 2-1, DBTC A trails the undefeated Ateneo Magis, which is at 3-0 with a game left.

In the other Group 2 game, Ateneo de Cebu closed out its elimination round on a positive note with a 3-0 win over Abellana National School with goals by John Daniel Betinol, Manolito Arcillas and Marcus Whysall. Ateneo is currently third with six points, while ANS only has three points but has a game left. The last team in the group, Sisters of Mary School-Boystown, lost all three games so far.

Meanwhile in the Boys 16 Division, DBTC A jumped to second place in Group A, while the Cebu International School and DBTC B figured in a 2-2 draw to share third place in Group B in the Boys 16 Division.

DBTC A got its second win of the elimination round with a 3-0 rout of Sisters of Mary School-Boystown, with Simon del Campo scoring twice and Carsten Pumareja getting the other goal. DBTC A now has six points to trail the undefeated KNF-Don Bosco Boys Home, which won all its three games.

On the other hand, the University of San Carlos got its first win in Group A, 10-2, over the Lapu-Lapu United. Johan Sarsonas had a hat trick, John Rom scored twice, while Josh Ruelas, CJ Akut and James Landes had one each in USC’s easy win. USC is now at three points for third place, while Sacred Heart School Ateneo de Cebu, Lapu-Lapu United and SMS-Boystown are still winless.

In Group B, CIS showed its fighting spirit as it came back twice to force a 2-2 draw with DBTC B. John Ronrique gave DBTC the lead in the 13th before Choi Joh equalized for CIS in

the 33rd.

John Philip Tabar gave DBTC the lead again two minutes from time but CIS fought back and found the equalizer thanks to Liam Cergneux in the 67th

minute.

CIS and DBTC now have four points for third place in the group, trailing the undefeated SHS-Ateneo, which has nine points, and Abellana National School, which has six points. Giuseppe is fifth in the group at three points, while DBTC C is last after losing all three matches.
