4 soldiers arrested

FOUR soldiers were arrested on Wednesday, January 15, for violating the gun ban imposed by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) during the 2019 election period.

By virtue of a warrant of arrest, the Iligan City Police, Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-Iligan, Regional Mobile Force Battalion-Northern Mindanao and other law enforcement agencies arrested Corporal Benjie Maghanoy, 35, Staff Sergeant Franklin Gutierres, 48, Sergeant Jose Calapao Jr., 40, and Corporal Alsunday Sandag, 43.

All are active members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and are currently assigned in Upper Pulacan, Labangan, Zamboanga del Sur.

Police Major Abogado Mautin, chief of Iligan City Police Station (ICPS) 4, said the four soldiers were already under custody since they are also suspects in the ambush of the former mayor of Dumingag town, Zamboanga del Sur, Naciancino Pacalioga Jr on March 2019.

Mautin said the four were arrested in court on Wednesday after attending the hearing in connection with their involvement in the 2019 ambush.

The Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 6 in Iligan City issued the warrant of arrest for the gun ban violation on December 16 with no bail recommended.

During election period, the Comelec prohibits bearing, carrying and transporting of firearms or deadly weapons by any person, and not to allow the employment of security personnel or bodyguards.
