P50-M flood control sought for La Trinidad

LAWMAKERS in La Trinidad town in Benguet asked for the aid of Senator Christopher Go for the allocation of funds for flood control systems and road pavements for the town.

During Tuesday’s regular session on January 14, councilors approved the resolution authored by Councilor Arthur Shontogan requesting Senator Christopher Lawrence Bong Go to allocate funds amounting to P50 million to be used for the construction of flood control system and road pavement at Sitio Tebteb, Balili, La Trinidad, Benguet.

Shontogan disclosed the measure seeks to ensure public safety and protection of life and property and likewise be used as an alternate route to ease traffic.

Sitio Tebteb is considered as flood hazard zone with 1,000 household incessantly evacuated during rainy seasons due to possible occurrence of flash flood and soil erosion.

“Notwithstanding the fact that it is a priority project, the subject construction of flood control and road pavement require a huge amount of money which this local government unit cannot sufficiently provide considering its meager funds catering to 16 barangays,” the resolution said.

Shontogan said to be forwarded to the senator are attached and supporting documents including the proposed design and plan for the flood control and road pavement.

Aside from landslide, occurrence of flooding during heavy rains is experienced in the town.

Balili River is a major water tributary which usually overflows during the rainy season, affecting farmers nearby.

The councilor added the local government unit started the project, however, with meager funds they had to seek help from the senator.

“We hope to finish the project which was assessed by the municipal engineer’s office adding P50 million needed for its total completion,” he said.

Shontogan remains bullish for the completion of the flood control system and road pavement within the year and before the start of rainy season.
