108 kilos hotdogs seized in Mandaue mall

THE Cebu provincial African swine fever (ASF) task force has confiscated around 108 kilos of Purefoods Tender Juicy hotdogs sold in a mall in Mandaue City as officials continued to strictly enforce Cebu’s ban on the entry of pork products and hog imports from Luzon.

According to ASF task force head and provincial veterinarian Dr. Mary Rose Vincoy, the hotdogs valued at P16,200 were seized during an inspection conducted on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2020.

Vincoy said the mall’s management explained that the supplier had just put in their new stocks of the hotdogs.

“We do not know if these are old stocks that they hid and they were just waiting for Sinulog or these are really new arrivals because other establishments proved negative when we checked,” said Vincoy in a mix of Cebuano and English.

The task force has beefed up its monitoring of pork products from Luzon as the Sinulog festival draws closer on Sunday, Jan. 19, inspecting stores, malls and ports across the province.

Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia earlier also reminded that Cebu’s ban on pork from Luzon will remain in effect even with Sinulog.

Establishments caught selling banned pork products will face sanctions from the provincial government. A list of violators will be endorsed by the task force to the Provincial Attorney’s Office.

Earlier, Manila-based San Miguel Food and Beverage Inc., makers of Purefoods products, paid for major sponsorship of the Sinulog 2020 festival to exclusively sell their food products, including hotdogs and tocinos, in three major areas of Cebu City.

The P3 million exclusive sponsorship contract with the Sinulog Foundation Inc. was questioned by local food manufacturer Virginia Food Inc. (See separate story.) (ANV / RHB)
