FOLLOWING assertions that the Manila-based company will sell pork products during the Sinulog festivities, San Miguel Foods clarified that it is committed to comply with Capitol's order prohibiting the sale of pork products from Luzon in Cebu.

In a statement, San Miguel Foods said it intends to showcase its non-pork products, namely, Purefoods Tender Juicy All-Chicken Dog and Tender Juicy Hotdog made with chicken and beef, as well as Purefoods Chicken Tocino.

"The sponsorship by San Miguel Foods of the annual Sinulog Festival is part of a San Miguel-wide corporate sponsorship that includes other brands such as San Miguel Beer and Ginebra San Miguel. It aims to contribute to the rich, vibrant, and colorful celebration of Cebuanos that is famous the world over," San Miguel Foods said.

San Miguel Foods is a major sponsor of Sinulog 2020.

Earlier, Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia received a copy of a letter from Philippine Association of Meat Processors Inc. president Felix Tiukinhoy Jr. addressed to SFI executive director Elmer “Jojo” Labella, bringing attention to the product sponsorship of San Miguel Purefoods, which specified hotdogs and tocino as part of the sponsorhip package.

“As far as we know, the specified items are pork-based covered by the entry ban imposed by the Cebu City and Provincial Government which remains in effect,” said Tiukinhoy in his letter to Labella dated January 14, 2020.

Tiukinhoy is the president of Cebu-based Virginia Foods Inc.

The governor issued Executive Order 23 last November 6, 2019, declaring as unlawful the transport to Cebu Province of any and all kinds of meat (chicken, beef or fish) and any kind of food product that has been stored in the same cold storage facility as pork, pork-related products and byproducts sourced from Luzon.

The ban on Luzon pork will remain in effect until June 30, 2020. (JGS, with reports from ANV/RHB)
