Boomerang: Responsible Partying

After two years of being banned, street parties are making their comeback this Sinulog. Considered as one of the much-anticipated activities during this fiesta in honor of Sto. Niño, the street parties contribute to both the festive atmosphere, as well as the raucous side of the Sinulog. In the past years, young people (most especially) have immersed themselves in celebrations with their friends (and strangers) with booze and loud music playing in the background. But it was also during these parties that hooliganism (e.g. parked cars being vandalized) and violence reared its ugly head. As these parties are going to pour in later this week, some of our readers share tips on celebrating Sinulog trouble-free.

Young people should always know their limits so as to avoid trouble in clubs or street parties. Additionally, being around good people and friends in these venues enables one to have a good time and stay out of trouble.

Make sure you’re going with the right crowd by choosing people who avoid getting into heated arguments and care about each other’s safety and welfare. If you must, drink in moderation and stay in control by knowing your limits and knowing when to say no. If young people remain responsible and act with decency and self-respect, they can avoid running into trouble at the club or at street parties.

Always plan ahead. Surround yourself with a group of people whom you trust the most and make sure to stick with them always. Do not leave the group on your own without their consent or without knowing the risks that lies ahead.
