“BUENA MANO” is how birthday glam gal Susan Montecillo refers to her very recent bash at the newly renovated, artistically decorated, superbly comfortable Sinulog Hall of the Rizal Memorial Library and Museum along Osmeña Blvd. You see, that third floor of the building was something of an eyesore until a few months ago. Then thanks to the effort of Cebu City Vice Mayor Mike Rama and his construction team, the place has become the perfect venue for events like the birthday dinner-dance of Susan!

“And I was the first,” Susan proudly mentions to all her more than 250 guests who were likewise wide-eyed with surprise at the change! Artworks now adorn the walls, the interiors have been redone in a light color and there’s even a stage where a live band played danceable tunes. And why not? Susan has been a super-graceful figure in the dance floor, not just dancing but executing difficult boogie, cha-cha and tango steps!

That memorable evening, Susan added a "0" to her age. We won’t tell you the exact figure! With several changes in attire, she attended to her guests with much care.

Those who were around were family, close relatives and friends, and her schoolmates and classmates in elementary and high school, and college. Add to that her co-members from various organizations.

To add entertainment to the already fun-filled evening, three were dance presentations, a photo gallery depicting Susan’s transition from babyhood to adulthood. Vice Mayor Rama was there with multiple tasks: to deliver a moving message, sing his signature song, The Way You Look Tonight, skillfully played the conga with the live band, and culminated the visit with a boogie with the celebrant!

The party was far from over, what with the entire assemblage ripping the dance floor apart! Happy birthday, Susan!

Lilian Tan-Santos chose the Grand Majestic Restaurant for her birthday lunch last week. “Its just family,” she replied, when asked how long was her guest list. True enough, as the photo shows, we were only six, with this writer being the only non-family. During the sumptuous Chinese buffet, we saw owner Winglip Chang checking on the food preparation. No wonder the dishes are oozing with flavor and tender to the tongue most especially the Peking duck!

When Gel Mendiola-Alox marks another year you can bet, her huge family, children, grandkids, and in-laws, exert all efforts to make it a milestone to remember. We recall some years back, the kids planned a surprise party for her, complete with lion dancers and trainers for good luck. Needless to say, the apos (grandchildren) were thrilled to bits!

On her umpteenth birthday dinner recently, the venue was Beverly View and as the name suggests, it’s a magical place with a sweeping view of the city, and beyond. Gel, clad in a ruby-red dress, will certainly get her wish as she blew those birthday candles. Many more birthdays to come, Gel!
