Cebu City mayor to miss ‘Unity Dance’ to head Duterte meeting party

CEBU City Mayor Edgardo Labella will not be able to dance with Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia during the Sinulog Grand Parade on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2020.

Labella, during a press conference on Friday, Jan. 17, said he had been designated him to head the meeting party of President Rodrigo Duterte, who is expected to watch the contingents perform inside the Cebu City Sports Center.

“I was advised by the Presidential Security Group and the Presidential Management Staff to be always ready as a meeting party of the President, whether it’s in the morning, in the afternoon, or late. I have to stand by,” the mayor said.

Much as he would like to dance with the governor on Sunday, he said needs to be ready for the President’s visit.

Because he anticipated changes in the plan, he said he already performed the traditional Sinulog dance last Friday morning after the Walk with Mary.

Garcia posted a video on her Facebook page on Thursday night, Jan. 16, showing the governor and Labella rehearsing the “Unity Dance” at the Capitol Social Hall.

Top officials of the Province and Cebu City were supposed to make history by dancing together as guest performers along with dancers from Alcoy town’s Siloy Festival at the grand parade on Sunday. (Mae Fhel Gom-os, USJ-R Intern)
