UV contingent wins Sinulog sa Airport

THE University of the Visayas (UV) cheer dance team emerged as champions in the ritual showdown contest during the fourth Sinulog sa Airport at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) on Friday, Jan. 17, 2020.

The annual activity was organized by the GMR-Megawide Cebu Airport Corp. (GMCAC), which currently operates the airport.

Also joining the competition were Carcar Central National High School, Gun-ob National High School, Indiana Aerospace University, Nemesian Dance Theater, Tingo National High School, Philippine State College of Aeronautics and Sta. Rosa National High School Senior High Dance Troupe.

Avigael Ratcliffe, GMCAC corporate communication junior manager, said some of the contingents were not new to the competition.

She said that the activity was aimed to provide a grand welcome for balikbayans and tourists who come to Cebu for the Sinulog.

It was also a way of promoting the annual fiesta at the airport, she said.

Aside from the ritual showdown competition, the contingents also competed in street dancing, making their way from the departure area of Terminal 1 to the arrival area at Terminal 2 before going back to the Airport Village in Terminal 1.

There was also a search for best festival queen.

For its victory, UV took home a cash prize of P100,000.

It also took the top spot in street dancing, while its lead dancer was named festival queen.

The Nemesian Dance Theater placed second in the ritual showdown and bagged a cash prize of P75,000, followed by the Carcar National High School, which received P50,000.

Aside from the Sinulog sa Airport, GMCAC officials also distributed “Sinulog kits” to local and foreign tourists if decide to attend the Sinulog Grand Parade on Sunday, Jan. 19.

The kit’s contents included a Sinulog shirt, bottled water, biscuits, a whistle and the official Sinulog 2020 guide made by the Sinulog Governing Board and the Sinulog Foundation Inc. ( GCM / JKV )
