CEBU Archbishop Jose Palma encouraged local officials, the private sector and the public to unite in solving Cebu’s problems. Palma was the main celebrant of the Pontifical Mass held at the Pilgrim Center in front of the Basilica del Sto. Niño at 6 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2020. “Unta atong siyam ka mga syudad, ang atong kapin 40 ka mga municipalidad, ang atong government religious bisan paman ang civil society will be one, nga dunay paghiusa (Supposedly, our nine cities and our more than 40 municipalities, our government, the religious sector, even the civil society will be one, that they are united).” he said. In his homily, he shared his joy for the glory of God through His son, the Señor Sto. Niño. He said many people rejoice in the glory of God on fiesta day because of the grace of the Holy Child. “There’s an explosion of faith sa atong gipakitang debosyon kang Señor Sto. Niño ug kini sa atong paghiusa (in the devotion that we have shown to the Señor Sto. Niño, uniting all of us). Salamat sa Diyos (Thank God),” he said. He also invited devotees to come back next year for the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Christianity in the country. Palma said the faithful should always have in mind that during the feast day of the Señor Sto. Niño they are united in their love for the Lord despite temptations and limitations. A mass officiated by Msgr. Roberto Alesna was also held inside the Cebu City Sports Center at 8 a.m., In his homily, Alesna said, “Christianity is not simply a religion. Christianity is a relationship.” He said that it’s the kind of relationship where unity promoted in the family, in the community, in the church and among officials of Cebu Province, Cebu City and the National Government. He also pointed out the importance of the two commandments: loving God and loving one’s neighbor. He said the faithful should not separate these commandments. “How can we love God and not love our neighbor?” said Alesna. He also thanked officials of Cebu Province, Cebu City and the National Government for showing unity to the people. The mass was attended by Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia, Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella and Vice Mayor Michael Rama, among others. The Sinulog Grand Parade started after the mass. (JCT, JJL)
