Meditalk: Anger management issues

Meditalk: Anger management issues

DEAR Dr. Fritz,

I hope you are doing great. Call me Cassy. My problem is, it seems that I cannot handle my anger. When I am angry, I feel like choking that person or throwing things around me. I wanted to release my anger and frustration in a more subtle way. Please tell me how.

Thank you and more power.

Cassy

Dear Cassy,

To be angry is normal. It gets to anyone and everyone of us. We all have our moments. But, you need to check your anger. Your blood pressure can go up and it won't do you any good. So, here are some ways that you can do that you can vent your anger without you looking like a child on a tantrum.

1. Try to be cool and take things easy.

You can do this by breathing deeply and slowly for about five minutes. Then, reevaluate the situation. You can write about it and assess.

2. Look for an outlet.

I understand what you feel when you said, you wanted to throw things around you. You just wanted to release that anger. But, do it in a healthy way. You can grab your pillows and throw it and yell if you need to. Be sure you don't throw glasses around. Or else, you will be in such a mess. Worse, you might even hurt yourself. That's an insult added to injury, my dear. And cry, if you must.
