A DAVAO businessman drowned while diving in Barangay Aundanao, Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos), as he ran out of air supply in his oxygen tank while underwater at about 90 feet deep.

The incident happened during their diving adventure around 6:35 p.m. Sunday, January 19.

The businessman, identified as Lorynold Pangilinan Posesano, 40, married and resident of Hillside Subdivision, Lanang, Davao City, was diving near a private resort situated in Barangay Aundano in the northern part of Samal District, together with his four companions.

While underwater, he allegedly executed hand signal to go up and while swimming, he grabbed the oxygen regulator of his diving companions Ricky and Racer Jay. This alarmed Ricky and Racer Jay, said the Police Regional Office-Davao in its report.

The two divers then helped Posesano and brought him to Davao del Norte District Hospital-Samal Zone. The victim, however, was declared dead on arrival.

Samal Island is known for its idyllic diving spot, attracting many scuba divers.

Meanwhile, Coast Guard Station Davao Commander Garry Laynesa has reminded divers to observe the safety rules for scuba diving to avoid accidents.

"Mandatory kasi na may buddy divers sila kasi in case of emergency, may immediate na mag assist talaga sa kanila. Tapos may safety briefing din ng before mag dive," Laynesa said.
