THE Cebu Provincial Board (PB) has passed an ordinance creating a body tasked to address traffic woes in the metropolitan Cebu area.
Filed by sixth district PB Member Glenn Anthony Soco, who heads the committee on planning and development, the measure creating the Traffic Management Board of Cebu was approved on second and final reading on Monday afternoon, Jan. 20, 2020.
During the PB’s first regular session for this year, Soco said the executive department has certified as urgent the proposed ordinance as the problem on vehicular congestion continues to hound Cebu.
“This being an ordinance of the province of Cebu, it is important that we harmonize the policies and ordinances of municipalities and cities,” Soco said.
The board’s main function is to give solutions to the traffic problems along national highways in the metropolitan Cebu area.
The body will have as members officials of the Department of Public Works and Highways, Land Transportation Office, Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, Philippine National Police, League of Municipalities and local government units in Metro Cebu, among others.
The approval of the proposed ordinance came a day after President Rodrigo Duterte promised to help Cebuanos address the “horrendous” traffic in the metro by finding a source of fund for a traffic solution project.
Duterte made the commitment during his speech at the Cebu City Sports Center Sunday night, Jan. 19, when he dropped by to witness the Sinulog grand parade.
The President told the crowd that building a railway is the best solution to Metro Cebu’s traffic problem.
He said expanding Cebu’s roads is no longer feasible, especially since Cebu is an “old city.” (RTF)
