Penro donates wood for repair of Bangkung Malapad facility

THE Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (Penro) donated wood for the repair and restoration of the boardwalk of the Bangkung Malapad eco-tourism site in Sasmuan town.

PENRO officer Laudemir Salac, together with representatives from the local government unit of Sasmuan headed by Mayor Nardo Velasco, signed a deed of donation.

Sasmuan is to receive 118 pieces of Gmelina flitches at around 2,060 board feet.

Located along Sasmuan town’s coastal frontier is an island that locals refer to as Bangkung Malapad (Wide Bench). The area covers the area of around 405.50 hectares of mudflats.

The area was formed from volcanic sediments, which were carried by water currents into the area by the mighty Pasak River, which drains toward Sasmuan.

While the area is technically part of Sasmuan’s coastal village of Batang Dos, the island is in fact at the frontier of Pampanga Bay, which forms part of the greater enclosed sea of Manila Bay.

The island is now a focal point of conservation due to the fact that it now hosts some 13 hectares of fully grown mangroves and has been identified as a layover destination for thousands of migratory birds.

The area also serves as temporary home to more than 80 species of migratory birds from winter countries.

With the recent influx of tourists that are attracted to the serene beauty of the area, aside from the seasonal birdwatchers, local officials have realized the island’s potential and the urgent need to protect it.

The said area is a proposed Critical Habitat and Ecotourism Area.

This aims to strengthen ecotourism of Sasmuan, especially Sasmuan Bangkung Malapad, where bird watchers can take a glimpse of the 74,000 migratory birds that flock their way to the. At least 45 species of birds have been recorded to frequent the said area.
