TO HELP raise the awareness of protecting the environment, the Cebu City Government will be celebrating the Cebu City Environment Week every first week of June.

This after the Cebu City Council approved the ordinance authored by Cebu City Councilor Alvin Dizon on Wednesday, January 22, 2020.

For one week, the City will conduct a series of programs and activities aimed to bring environmental awareness among the residents of Cebu City. A committee will also be created which will plan activities and programs for the environment week.

Among the activities are information drives of both national and local environmental laws and policies. This include public fora and symposia and community-based awareness campaign.

There will also be model-building to recognize and popularize good practices and innovations on environmental protection. This will include an annual search for the Most Innovative Locally Developed Waste Management Practice and Technology; Most Environment-friendly Barangay; Institution and Commercial Establishment; Most Innovative Environmental Campaign and Advocacy from the Private Sector; and other similar activities that would encourage public interest and participation.

An exhibit showing environmental issues, initiative, advocacies and programs undertaken by both the government and private sectors will also take place for the public’s education and protection.

Tree-planting, tree-growing and river clean-up activities will also be observed, as well as the Earth Hour every June 5.

Earth Hour is a global celebration of the Environment Day which requires the people and businesses to turn off their respective lights and shut down most electrical appliances.

An amount of P3 million should be allocated to the Cebu City Environment and Natural Resources Office annually for the implementation of the activities and programs.

“This is an important vehicle for encouraging public awareness and concerted action for the protection of our environment,” said Dizon. (JJL)
