Mayor commits to plant 100,000 trees

MAYOR Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar announced that her administration continues to develop and maintain Zamboanga City’s approximately 19-hectare forest area at Climaco Freedom Park at Sitio Abong-Abong in Pasonanca Village and the mangrove forest in the villages of Talon-Talon and Mampang with a total area of 150 hectares in support to the National Greening Program (NGP).

“We will plant 100,000 trees before I end my final term as mayor of the city. While I am the mayor, we will remain firm in our stand against mining in the city as we urge our Congressional Representatives to pass measures protecting all of our watersheds and their buffer zones,” Salazar said.

The mayor added that as part of this city’s quest for enhanced execution of environmental programs and projects, the multi-sectoral technical working groups (TWGs) led in the completion of environmental plans for optimum use and sustainable development of this city’s natural resources, its habitats and species-level biodiversity.

She said the Office of the City Environment and Natural Resources (OCENR) was able to draft development plans and frameworks with the technical assistance from USAID-Protect Wildlife Project and inputs from concerned national regulatory agencies, academe and other partner stakeholders.

She said these include the management and development plans of the Great and Little Sta. Cruz Islands Protected Landscape and Seascape and the Pasonanca Natural Park, the Forest Land Use Plan (FLUP) for 2019 to 2027 and the Zamboanga City Central Mangrove Forest Framework covering the core villages of Mampang and Talon-Talon and adjacent villages that are teeming with mangrove forests to help stabilize the coastline and cushion the impacts of climate change to sustain livelihood and food security in the nearby communities.
