Soldier killed, 2 cops wounded in Marikina shootout

A SOLDIER was killed and two policemen were wounded in a shootout in Marikina City about noon Friday, January 24.

One of the policemen, Executive Master Sergeant Demetrio Sarita Magpali Jr., was in critical condition as of 4:30 p.m. Friday. He sustained a gunshot wound to the head.

The second police officer, Master Sergeant Edward Yap, was shot on his legs. Both are members of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG).

Killed during the shootout was Staff Sergeant Marvin Balucas.

Newly promoted National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) Director Debold Sinas said that based on initial investigation, the two policemen were traveling along A. Bonifacio Avenue in Barangka at around 11:30 a.m. Friday when a man on a motorcycle, later identified as Balucas, shot at them.

Balucas was killed after the CIDG men retaliated.

Both policemen were brought to the Amang Rodriguez Hospital in Marikina City. They were later transported to the Chinese Medical Center in Manila.

Sinas said investigation on the motive of the incident is ongoing. (SunStar Philippines)
