Police: Ex-Army member, ex-convict gunned down

TWO men, one of whom is a former member of the Philippine Army, were gunned down in two separate shooting incidents in Mandaue City and Consolacion town on Thursday night, Jan. 23, 2020.

In Mandaue City, police are still trying to identify who gunned down Roger Capuyan Moneva, 61.

Moneva, a former army member, was gunned down by still unidentified assailants on Zuellig St. in Barangay Subangdaku, Mandaue City at 6:45 p.m. on Thursday.

Police Capt. Marvin Fegarido, Subangdaku Police Station chief, said Moneva was onboard the motorcycle of his nephew, Joel Alin Capoy, when two unidentified men onboard another motorcycle suddenly tailed them at the North Reclamation Area.

When they reached Zuellig St., Capoy reportedly sped up and didn’t notice that the two men tailing them were already shooting at them.

The encounter led their motorcycle to hit a gutter. On impact, the two men were thrown off the vehicle.

Moneva reportedly was still able to help Capoy get to his feet before he suddenly collapsed.

Capoy immediately called emergency services to help them.

Personnel from the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation were able to respond to the incident and attempt to revive Moneva but to no avail.

Moneva reportedly sustained gunshot wounds on the left side of his abdomen and left arm.

Fegarido said they asked Capoy if he could identify the two men who gunned down his uncle, but he never saw their faces.

One possible motive they are pursuing is concerning Moneva’s current work as a freelance bodyguard for an undisclosed casino in Lapu-Lapu City.

Fegarido said Capoy often picked up Moneva at his house in Barangay T. Padilla, Cebu City to take him to the casino where he worked.

Even Moneva’s family told police that he had no known enemies, even among his neighbors, Fegarido added.

Two hours after, local police in Consolacion town were also investigating the murder of Ryan Repollo Senas, 30, in Sitio San Roque, Barangay Lamac.

Police Maj. Vernino Noserale, Consolacion town police chief, said Senas was reportedly cooking dinner at his house at around 8 p.m. on Thursday when five armed men suddenly barged in and gunned him down. Senas died instantly.

Noserale said Senas’ killing might be related to his previous background as an ex-convict.

Senas was reportedly detained for an undisclosed period of time for a theft charge.

Senas also had previous theft records in various towns in northern Cebu.

Noserale said some of Senas’ victims may have hired guns-for-hire to kill him. (KFD, BBT, JKV)
