Garbage truck carrying ‘chicken entrails’ held

A GARBAGE truck owned by the Cebu City government is currently being held at the transfer station in Barangay Inayawan after it was discovered that it contained sacks of chicken entrails.

The garbage truck, which was assigned to collect waste from Barangay Paril, was supposed to dispose of the waste to the transfer station on Friday morning, Jan. 24, 2020.

The truckload of chicken entrails reportedly came from a poultry farm owned by an official of Barangay Paril.

The Cebu City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Ccenro) has now started its investigation on the matter.

Lawyer Junine Aragones, Ccenro acting chief, said they sent their environmental enforcers to investigate the matter.

Aragones said that special wastes such as chicken innards should not be disposed of at the transfer station and should be delivered directly to a waste treatment facility.

He said that if left unattended, the innards could attract unwanted flies and other disease-carrying insects and organisms and could spread to other communities near Inayawan.

Aside from environmental issues, Aragones said that using the government-owned garbage truck for personal use is another violation.

They are coordinating with the City Legal Office (CLO) on what legal actions to take.

Separately, Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella has directed the City Health Office to also conduct its own investigation.

He has also ordered the CLO to find out who is the barangay official who operates the poultry farm in Barangay Paril.

Labella also reminded public officials in the city to avoid using government resources for their personal use, especially if it’s for their businesses. (USJ-R Journ Intern Mae Fhel Gom-os)
