PWD components hoped for Baguio rehab

WELFARE of the differently-abled in Baguio City is being pushed.

Councilor Arthur Allad-iw said he is hoping plans for persons with disabilities (PWDs) will be included in the upcoming rehabilitation of Baguio City.

Allad-iw said welfare for the PWD’s in the city must be included in all planned development and hopes provisions for these are being taken into consideration as part of universal goals worldwide.

The lawmaker said talks on massive rehabilitation of key areas in the city is ongoing and hopes plans for the PWD sector will likewise be presented in line with the rehabilitation proposed.

Part of the sustainable development goals of the United Nations is to promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all, the international community aims to achieve full and productive employment and decent work for all women and men, including for persons with disabilities.

Allad-iw said accessibility as well as economic opportunities is anticipated for the PWD’s when rehabilitation efforts commence.

The council previously proposed a measure ensuring job opportunities for senior citizens and the differently-abled, urging establishments to employ them, penned by councilor Betty Lourdes Tabanda.

Tabanda’s proposed ordinance aims to employ the seniors and PWD’s for work commensurate to their physical capabilities in various fast food chains and establishments in the city.

Based on records of the City Social Welfare and Development Office, there are 1,870 PWD identification cards that were issued as of June – 284 visual, 262 orthopedic, 330 deaf, 101 speech, 288 learning, 195 mental, 225 multiple, 160 chronic illness with disability and 26 psychosocial.
