ONE of Cebu’s well-known universities is partnering with a non-profit group to provide tutors for elementary school students in Barangay Kamagayan, Cebu City.

The University of the Visayas (UV), through its College of Education, along with Vriendschapsband Harlemmermeer Cebu (VHC), started the Kamagayan Community Tutorial Center in response to the need for tutors for elementary school students living in Kamagayan.

The university initiated the program in Kamagayan, one of its adopted barangays, after some students living in the village stopped going to school because they couldn’t manage their assignments, since some parents are not capable of teaching them in specific subjects and other parents have no time to take care of them, said Dr. Jezreel M. Tanilon, director of UV’s Community Extension Office.

Tanilon urged the parents to cooperate and participate in this project.

The project was launched on Friday, Jan. 24, 2020 at the Kamagayan barangay hall.

The actual tutorial will start on Monday, Jan. 27, at the multi-purpose hall in the barangay where they will accommodate elementary school students who want to be assisted with their assignments.

The university will provide student volunteers as tutors and 50 chairs while non-government organizations such as VHC and Justice, Peace & Integrity of Creation–Integrated Development (JPIC) Inc. will provide the study materials and equipment.

Dexter Ocampo, Barangay Kamagayan councilor and chairman of the committee on education and livelihood, said the VHC will provide the multimedia equipment such as LCD TV, printer, computer and projector.

Other sponsors have also committed to provide snacks for the students. As of yesterday, five student volunteers already committed to take part in a four-week tutorial to run from 6 to 8 p.m.

Each volunteer will tutor two to three students.

Dr. Nestor Ramirez, one of those who initiated the program, said the project will start this month and will end in March.

After that, they will evaluate if the project is effective based on the response of the parents and if the students learned from it, he added.

If the project is successful, they will continue the project for the whole school year starting this June until March next year, Ramirez added.

Fr. Romeo Cagatin, JPIC director, said he hopes students who avail of the project will be oriented with a purpose-driven life and inculcated human and Christian values to be of service to the world.

Marvin Villavinda, president of the Kalambuan sa Junquera Pinaagi sa Kugi ug Panaghiusa (Pundok Kadasig), said they were grateful for the organizations that initiated the project as it would help parents living in the village.

Cebu City Councilors Alvin Dizon, Prisca Nina Mabatid and Antonio Cuenco were also present during the project’s launching in behalf of the City. (USJ-R Journ Intern Mae Fhel Gom-os)
