Davao dominates taekwondo

THE Davao City Athletic Association (DCAA) Durians seized the overall championships in elementary boys and girls divisions at the close of the Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) Meet taekwondo competition at the Panabo National High School in Panabo City Wednesday.

The elementary boys team captured a total of four gold medals in categories 2, 3, 5 and 6 and one silver while the elementary girls team got two golds in categories 5 and 6 as well as three silvers.

In the secondary boys, DCAA bagged two golds (featherweight, welterweight divisions) and three silvers while the Durians salvaged the bantamweight gold and five silvers in secondary girls.

Over at the New Pandan covered court, the Henry Asilum-coached DCAA elementary boys basketball team lived up to its billing with an overwhelming 106-53 win over Davao del Sur for the gold while the DCAA secondary boys basketball squad coached by Arturo Malabanan also shared the limelight by whipping Panabo City Pioneers, 102-55, at the new Panabo City Multi-Purpose Gym.

Asilum's wards earlier crushed Tagum City, 154-37, in the semi-finals.

"We are very happy with our victory but we can't be complacent. We will resume rigid training right away in preparation for the Palarong Pambansa," Asilum said.

"We will have to maximize the two weeks left for training. It is my goal that we make it to the best four in Palaro," he added.

DCAA was a bronze medalist in elementary boys basketball in last year's Palaro held in Tacloban City.

While championship matches in badminton, gymnastics, boxing and sipa were still ongoing in Panabo City, the last core of the Davao City Athletic Association (DCAA) left the quarters at Davao City National High School (DCNHS) yesterday to compete in the final stop of the 2010 Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) Meet set to open today in Mati, Davao Oriental.
