Night market stalls give way to walkway

PEOPLE can now walk happily at the night market.

Councilor Philian Weygan-Allan said 41 walkways are now open for buyers during night market operations at Harrison Road.

Allan said sizes of stalls have not been uniformed and the move to reduce each is aimed to correct the fault and set into order the nightly event.

Allan said the original size of each stall was approximately 1.5 × 1.5 meters but reduced to 1.2 by 1.5 adding there are now 41 walkways since the reduction last week.

“For me, okay na ang downsized slots. That is experimental and doable, at least maraming alleys na daanan ng mga market goers at maiiwasan na ang human traffic gaya ng dati,” the city official said.

Allan said since the purge of 70 vendors in December 2019, no one else has been taken out of the market operations.

Those removed were found to be deceased already and those who have not been selling for two weeks straight.

The Harrison night market provides livelihood and employment to over 1,000 night market vendors and the city is earning approximately P1.5 million per month without much capital operating from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. daily.

The experimental downsizing of stall sizes is in effect for two weeks at the night market to give a wider walkway for buyers.
