Bacolod villages urged to sustain anti-dengue efforts

BACOLOD City Councilor Cindy Rojas urged all the officials to continue its program to help prevent dengue cases within their villages.

Rojas, chairperson of the City Council committee on health, said Tuesday, January 28, the villages should continue their 4-o’clock habit to destroy mosquito breeding sites in their areas.

“Because of the coronavirus, some of the barangays (villages) stopped their campaign against dengue. We should intensify our monitoring on coronavirus as well as our campaign to fight dengue,” she said.

She added that last year, Bacolod has more than 1,000 cases of dengue with about six fatalities.

The “4-o’clock habit” is a strategy that seeks to raise awareness and encourage the community to do its share and take time to weed out dengue breeding sites at 4 p.m. every day.

The City Government earlier launched the anti-dengue campaign, called “Deng-get-out of Bacolod! Mag 4-O’clock Habit Na!”

“We encourage everybody to do the 4-o’clock habit to clean their surroundings to search and destroy mosquito breeding places,” Rojas said.

She said from January 1 to 11 this year, Bacolod has a total of more than 20 dengue cases.

She said of 61 villages, Estefania, Tangub, Pahanocoy, Taculing, Mansiligan, and Alijis posted the highest number of dengue cases.

She added that the two most prominent species that transmit viruses are Aedes aegypti mosquito, which stays inside the house; and Aedes albopictus mosquito, which stays outside that transmit the viruses that cause dengue fever, yellow fever, among others.

Rojas disclosed that the public should also practice the 4S program of the Department of Health which stands for Search and destroy mosquito breeding places; use Self-protection measures; Seek early consultation for fever lasting more than two days; and Say no to indiscriminate fogging. (MAP)
