THE policeman who killed his wife, who was also a police officer, was diagnosed with a brain disease in 2019, documents showed.
Police Staff Sergeant Ariel Tuquib, 35, sought treatment after experiencing "generalized weakness", a medical certificate issued on June 24, 2019 stated.
He was found to be suffering from adrenoleukodystrophy, a genetic brain disorder that destroys myelin, the protective sheath that surrounds the brain’s neurons or nerve cells which allow people to think and control their muscles.
Tuquib was confined at the Philippine National Police (PNP) General Hospital in Camp Crame from May 27 to July 10, 2019, a memorandum submitted to the Central Visayas Police Regional Office (PRO-7) on July 23, 2019 showed.
According to the Stop ALD Foundation, ALD mostly afflicts boys and men.
Children with ALD show behavioral problems. As the disease progresses, their symptoms also grow worse, including blindness and deafness, seizures, loss of muscle control, and progressive dementia that lead to either death or permanent disability.
As reported earlier, Tuquib shot dead his wife, Juliet, who was a member of the Clarin Police Station Women and Children Protection Center, on Monday morning, January 27, in their home in Barangay Centro, Tubigon City, Bohol.
Juliet died on the spot. Ariel, who shot himself in the head, is in critical condition.

Ariel was formerly with the Tubigon Police Station but is currently with the Regional Personnel Holding and Accounting Unit 7 while waiting for the approval of his application for early retirement. He was reported to be suffering from depression.
Based on the accounts of the couple’s household helper as well as their 12-year-old son, Ariel and Juliet had been quarreling for a week before the shooting incident.
