VALENTINE'S Day is just a couple of weeks away and while it may seem like a celebration solely for those with significant others, that is not the case at all. This love month, let’s remember the most important kind of love to honor: self-love, one we continuously work on every day of our lives. For some inspiration and motivation, here are four films and series tackling self-love that you can watch on Netflix:
Someone Great
With a stellar cast of stars including DeWanda Wise, Brittany Snow and Jane The Virgin’s Gina Rodriguez, this is a modern rom-com set in the Big Apple, where Jenny, Rodriguez’s character, attempts to pick up the pieces after a break-up with her long-time boyfriend. With the company of her friends played by Snow and Wise, Jenny finds resolution, closure and most of all, healing.
Marriage Story
A heartbreaking but also heartwarming portrayal of divorce, Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story features stellar performances by Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver playing a couple in the process of getting a divorce. More than just about severance of two people, this heavy drama also tackles rediscovery of one’s self and ambition.
Sex Education
Last month, the second season of this hilariously realistic British teen comedy-drama was met with overwhelmingly positive reviews. The beauty of this show is its unabashed approach toward tackling sexuality, identity and other socially relevant issues that most shows tend to gloss over. In the latest season, Eric and Adam’s individual yet partly intertwined story lines are beautiful to see.
Queer Eye
There are so many things to love about this show: Tan’s sartorial picks, Bobby’s home makeovers, Antoni’s kitchen sessions, Jonathan’s grooming tips and Karamo’s pep talks, being some of them. But what makes this show truly life-changing is how the Fab 5 transforms the subjects, or ‘heroes’ as they call them, not just on the outside, but also on the inside. Get your box of tissues ready because you’re going to need it.
