Local flour millers donate bread to Taal evacuees

THE Philippine Association of Flour Millers (Pafmil) recently allotted an initial 1,000 bags of flour for the evacuees of the Taal Volcano eruption in Batangas, southern Luzon.

Pafmil is composed of Pilmico Foods Corp., RFM Corp., Philippine Flour Mills, General Milling Corp., Wellington Flour Mills and Universal Robina Corp.

The first 100 bags of flour were delivered to Tinapayan Bakery, which operates in Manila, and to Cuenca, Batangas. They were baked into pan de sal and distributed to evacuees in Cuenca.

Meantime, the second batch of 100 bags of flour produced about 37,000 hamburger buns. These were distributed to over 3,000 evacuees at evacuation centers in Tagaytay City near the City Hall, Tagaytay City Sports Activity Center and Tagaytay City Integrated School.

More evacuees from the municipalities of Alfonso and Mendez in Cavite and municipalities of Calatagan and Calaca in Batangas were also fed with the bread donated by the local flour millers.

“Pafmil believes in the inherent resilience of the Batangueño people. We hope that through our donations, we are able to nourish those affected by the Taal Volcano eruption and sustain their strength in the days to come,” said Ric Pinca, Pafmil executive director.

Sen. Francis Tolentino was also present, helping in the distribution of hamburger buns to a long queue of evacuees.

The baked goods have to be delivered in batches to make sure that these are handled properly.

More deliveries will be made in the coming days as Pafmil members, in coordination with the local governments of Batangas and Tagaytay determine which evacuation centers need more assistance. (S)
