Pangan: The unrehearsed scares of our lives

ASIDE from the jolting earthquakes which we cannot choose which areas in our country they can strike, the ever-threatening illnesses like the current 2019 Novel coronavirus, so named because there is no definite cause it surfaces within and amongst us, but is said to stem from animals, including the snakes (!) and before that, the SARS and the MERS Cov.

By the way, a big earthquake struck Turkey, an earthquake-prone country itself, causing death, initially, to some 21 people.

Besides these occurrences, we have to contend with the unpretentious outbursts of President Duterte, who ordered the termination of the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) between the Philippines and the United States. I must admit, he scares most of us because of his short and ill-temper and the ensuing outbursts.

The long-standing VFA provides us a sense of security as the Americans observe its provisions to the letter since the Agreement also contains "safety" features to protect our countrymen particularly the soldier-participants in the annual exercises.

Why should President Duterte use VFA's cancellation as a leverage against Bato dela Rosa's cancelled US visa? Would his long friendship with the former PNP chief warrant the unilateral cancellation of an agreement which has the Senate's imprimatur? Tell me, please.

Almost everybody, particularly Metro Manila netizens, is awaiting progress of the projects long farmed out and aimed at decongesting the crowded metropolis.

Roads, bridges, extensions of expressways, even the proposed subway system, are being awaited with enthusiasm. The government should push through these projects with renewed vigor and determination to, once and for all, decongest the concrete jungle of Edsa. At the peak of traffic, it becomes a virtual parking lot, full of vehicles and other contraptions. And what about the ambitious five-minute drive from Cubao to Makati? It would remain a wild dream until these projects are realized.
