Bacolod honors Tan

BACOLOD. TYCOON Dr. Andrew Lim Tan, chairman of the Alliance Global Group Inc., was conferred “adopted son of Bacolod City” and declared honorary mayor of the city Saturday, February 1.

The conferment rites were held during the celebration of the 15th Bacolaodiat Festival led by Mayor Evelio Leonardia, Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran, Congressman Greg Gasataya, the members of the City Council, and Filipino Chinese community, at the Bacolod Government Center in the city Saturday.

Also present was Presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo.

Leonardia issued Executive Order No. 3 Series of 2020 conferring upon Tan, adopted son of Bacolod, the distinction of being honorary mayor of the city during the celebration the 2020 celebration of the Bacolaodiat Festival.

Leonardia signed the executive order on Saturday.

Tan was named adopted son of Bacolod City by virtue of Resolution No. 17 Series of 2020, passed and unanimously approved by the City Council on January 8.

Leonardia said it has been a tradition in Bacolod City that during the Bacolaodiat Festival celebration, a nationally acclaimed member of the Filipino-Chinese community is declared as adopted son and honorary mayor of the city.

He said Tan is the epitome of success, his rise being the result of hard work, passion, determination and perseverance despite many hardships, a Filipino worthy of emulation.

“The said celebration shall gain more meaning and significance with the recognition of the achievement, endeavors and contributions of Tan. From humble beginnings, he has become one of the most admired entrepreneurs in the Philippines, a renowned innovator, brand builder and a recipient of the Order of Lakandula in 2010,” he added.

The mayor noted that the Megaworld established the upper East as townships and industrial estate development in Bacolod City, and upon its completion, it will general direct and indirect jobs in BPO, construction, transportation, commercial and retail business, becoming the next premiere business distinct of the city.

Leonardia said the City of Bacolod and its constituents gratefully recognize Tan for his achievements and exceptional contributions to the economic development and growth of Bacolod and of the Filipino national in general, and honor him with the distinction of holding the title of Honorary Mayor of Bacolod during the 2020 celebration of the Bacolaodiat Festival.

Tan said Bacolod is the first city in the country that is giving him this title and honor.

“When the honorable mayor called me several weeks ago to inform me about being the honorary mayor of Bacolod, I never had any second thoughts about accepting it. There was only one question that came into my mind, how do I fill in the shoes of Mayor Leonardia who has already done so much for this city?” he said.

Indeed, it is going to be a big shoe to fill even just for this day that I become an honorary mayor, he added.

Tan pointed out that it’s a great privilege to become part of the city that is admired as model of other highly urbanized cities in the country in terms of governance and competitiveness.

“Congratulations to Bacolod City, and to Mayor Leonardia, for your recent recognition as the most competitive highly urbanized city in Western Visayas in terms of economic dynamism and infrastructure by the Department of Trade and Industry,” Tan said.

“Also, I would like to personally congratulate Mayor Leonardia for having been elected national president of the League of Cities of the Philippines, and for being the only city mayor appointed to become part of the legislative-executive development advisory council (Ledac) by President Rodrigo Duterte,”he said.

“I wish the people of Bacolod, Mayor Leonardia and wife Elsa, Vice Mayor Familiaran and all the city councilors, Congressman Gasataya, and all the Baclod City officials, continued success in the years to come,” he added.

After the conferment rites, Tan signed three executive orders include Executive Order No. 5 reconstituting the Local Investment Board, Creating an Executive Committee and Designating a Board Secretary, Executive Director and the Local Economic and Investment Promotions Officer; Executive Order No. 6 an order reconstituting the “Banwahanon Awards Committee; and Executive Order No. 7 reconstituting the project monitoring committee of the City of Bacolod.

Tan also signed one of the mayor’s permits with registered business name Philippine Army Finance Center Producers Integrated Cooperative (PAFCPIC).

Tan is the chairman and CEO of Alliance Global Group Inc., which consolidates his business interest in various industries such as the real estate through Megarworld Corp., distilled spirits manufacturing through Emperador Inc., quick service restaurant through Golden Arches Development Corp., integrated tourism through Travellers International Hotel Group Inc., and infrastructure development through Infracorp Development Inc. The entire Alliance Global Group has over 45, 000 employees.

The companies under Alliance Global cater to the needs of the growing Filipino middle class while paying a role in Philippine nation-building, an endeavor that has remained constant and steadfast throughout Tan’s career.

In previous years, the City Government also declared the five Filipino-Chinese businessmen Lucio Tan, John Gokongwie Jr., Henry Sy, Eduardo Cuangco Jr., and Jose Mari Chan as adopted sons of Bacolod.
