THE City Government of Davao has expanded its current pork import ban to the provinces of Davao del Sur and Davao Occidental, following the reported death of around 1,000 pigs due to African Swine Fever (ASF) in Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental.

Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio said she included Davao del Sur after she received reports of suspected ASF in the province.

“Dili na ta nagapasulod og baboy nga hayop gikan sa Davao Occidental. Dunay usa ka case dinhi sa Davao del Sur, unconfirmed case pa siya, so gi-include na nato ang Davao del Sur sa pag-ban sa entry sa ilang mga pork and pig products diri sa Davao City (We no longer allow the entry of live hogs from Davao Occidental. There is also an unconfirmed case in Davao del Sur but still we included Davao del Sur in the import ban of the pork and pork products),” she said.

Davao City has initially implemented the ban on the entry of pork and pork products from Luzon during the ASF outbreak in September last year.

“Kaniadto pa duna na tay mga personnel assigned sa checkpoint sa Task Force Davao and naga-stop man gyud tanan ang mga vehicles diha sa checkpoints (We already have personnel assigned in the Task Force Davao checkpoint and vehicles are required to stop in the checkpoint),” she said.

She urged backyard hog farmers in the city to avoid feeding their swine with swills.

“[It is] very dangerous ang magpakaon og mga lamaw especially nga dunay mga pork products nga wala ta kahibalo nga mag-positive sa ASF gikan sa laing lugar (It is very dangerous to feed the pigs with swill especially if those have pork products that we do not know if they are positive of ASF from other areas),” she said.

The Hog Farmers Association of Davao (Hogfadi) also supported the decision of the mayor to ban the entry of pork from Davao Occidental and Davao del Sur in the city.

In a text message to SunStar Davao, Hogfadi president Eduardo So said some of the lechoneros get their pigs from these areas.

“The most important thing is to prevent the spread of the virus. We have enough supply pa naman,” So said.

He added that the hog farmers were already informed by the City Veterinary Office to stop buying from infected provinces.

On Saturday, February 1, the Municipality of Don Marcelino in Davao Occidental implemented a 24/7 temporary lockdown in selling and buying of pigs after ASF killed the backyard hogs in eight barangays namely Linadasan, North Lamidan, South Lamidan, Calian, Mabuhay, Lawa, Nueva Villa and Baluntaya.

On Sunday, February 2, the Provincial Government of Davao Occidental extended the lockdown to Municipality of Malita which also reported cases of ASF in barangays Bito, Kidalapong, Tubalan, Felis, Mana, Talogoy, and New Argao.
