Motorcycle crash kills man in Carmen

A PILE of construction materials left unattended was determined by authorities to be the contributing factor in a 27-year-old man’s death during a road incident in Barangay Dawis Sur, Carmen, northern Cebu at 12 a.m. Monday, Feb. 3, 2020.

The fatality was identified as Nikkie Catarata, a resident of Barangay Odlot, Bogo City.

Catarata was driving his motorcycle along the southbound lane of the national highway when he crashed into a pile of construction materials that were used to fix a portion of a bad road in Dawis Sur. There was no warning sign placed before the pile, said P/Corp. Francisco Domasig of the Carmen Police Station.

As a result of the crash, Catarata was thrown off his motorcycle and his body fell on the pavement hard, said Domasig.

Catarata, still alive, was about to get up when he was run over by a van-for-hire driven by Edmundo Pino, a 50-year-old Daanbantayan town native.

Catarata was rushed to the Cebu Provincial Hospital in Bogo City, but he died before reaching the facility.

Pino surrendered to the police after the incident. He was driving the van along the northbound lane when he hit Catarata.

A complaint of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide will be filed against Pino if Catarata’s family decides not to pursue a settlement with the driver. (BBT / JKV)
