Cebu City creates senior citizen federation

THE Office of Senior Citizen Affairs (Osca) has started its selection process for the leader of the elderly in Cebu City.

This is the first time that the City created a senior citizen federation, and Mayor Edgardo Labella is tasked to pick its pioneering president, who will have a term limit of three years.

Osca Acting Executive Director Jeffrey Ocampo said the presidents of the senior citizen associations in the city’s 80 barangays are the delegates to an Osca-initiated assembly.

The elderly presidents then will choose among themselves the 15 delegates to the next round of voting, during which only five delegates would continue to the final stage.

After the five leaders will cast their votes, only the three leaders with the most votes will be endorsed to Labella.

The mayor then will pick the president regardless of the top three leaders’ rankings in the final round of voting.

Ocampo said Labella could pick the elderly federation president by the end of February 2020, or in the first week of March.

The Osca has been visiting barangays, and the elderly in the 41 villages had already chosen their respective delegates. The first round of voting will commence after the remaining 39 barangays will choose their leaders.

Cebu City has around 100,000 senior citizens who are holders of Osca identification cards. Of the city’s graying population, only 82,000 are receiving P12,000 in annual cash aid as the rest were transferees. (PAC / KAL )
