Kapangan backs chemical use for marijuana eradication

IF IT is proven to totally destroy marijuana, use of chemicals for marijuana eradication will be backed by Kapangan town, Benguet.

Mayor Manny Fermin is hoping for the success of the idea of using chemicals citing traditional methods of marijuana eradication utilizes uprooting and burning by authorities.

“If that (chemicals) assures no marijuana to live, then it is good. Because if we only burn that (marijuana), we don’t know if that will grow again. Baka iyon iyong balik-balikan,” Fermin said.

The Police Regional Office Cordillera have previously considered on studying the use of chemicals in marijuana eradication.

The use of chemicals is being pushed as anti-narcotic operations in the town second week of January saw the uprooting of 15,000 fully grown marijuana plants with an estimated value of P3 million.

The chief executive was dismayed on the recent operation adding Kapangan was declared drug cleared since last quarter of 2017.

Fermin added the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency will visit the town in order to discuss matters on the status of the town in lieu of illegal drugs.

Earlier, Benguet Provincial Police Office recorded a resurgence of new marijuana plantation sites in the towns of Kapangan, Kibungan and Bakun.

Fermin have called the attention of people to be in unison and help the local government unit against its anti-illegal drug campaign.

“Farmers are asking for farm to market roads but unscrupulous persons are utilizing this in their illegal activity,” he added.

Benguet Board Member Roberto Canuto said demand of marijuana must be first removed in order to eliminate cultivation of illegal drugs in the town.

The former Kapangan chief executive added information education campaign among stakeholders must be conducted with the aid of force multipliers to continuously inform the public of its ill effects.
